Starts at 11:00 am (Eastern time)
Mark Gregory Thomas, 65, of Keene, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully and quietly on Monday, September 7, 2026, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by the love of his family.
Mark was born on July 21, 1961, in Marshall, Texas, to the late Johnette (Phillips) and Bobby Thomas. He was educated locally and graduated from Brazoswood High School with the Class of 1979. He continued his education at Sam Houston State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design.
In 1999, Mark met Kira Dawn while working at Southwest Texas State University. Their friendship grew into a lasting love, and on March 30, 2002, they were married in a simple and beautiful ceremony at the Bay Area Museum and Chapel in Clear Lake, Texas, surrounded by family and friends. Together, Mark and Kira built a life filled with love, creativity, adventure, and countless memories. Before settling in Keene in 2021, they traveled extensively throughout the country, often accompanying Kira in her work as a traveling X-ray and CT technologist.
Mark was a remarkably talented and creative man whose curiosity found expression in many forms. He played guitar, piano, and ukulele, wrote songs, enjoyed drawing, and had a natural gift for working with his hands. He was also a gifted writer and quietly treasured a collection of short stories he wrote over the years. His creativity was not simply something he practiced—it was part of the way he experienced and understood the world.
Mark was a member of Congregation Ahavas Achim in Keene, where he found community and connection. He will be remembered for his many talents, his thoughtful spirit, and, most of all, for the love he shared with Kira, his family, and the people whose lives he touched.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Kira Dawn Damme’ Thomas; his siblings, Robert Brian Thomas and his wife, Lori, and Tracey Meyer and her husband, Robert; brother-in-law Kriston Damme’; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind two cherished companions, his dog, Cooper, and his cat, Chloe.
Mark’s life was one of creativity, love, partnership, and quiet adventure. Though his absence will be deeply felt, the music he made, the stories he wrote, the things he created with his hands, and the memories he made with those he loved will remain.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at Congregation Ahavas Achim, 84 Hastings Avenue, Keene, NH, with burial to follow in the family lot at Monadnock View Cemetery, 499 Park Avenue, Keene. Family and friends are invited to join together for a luncheon at the synagogue following the burial.
Visiting hours will be held at the home of Kira and Mark on Wednesday from 3:00–5:00 p.m. and Thursday from 12:00–4:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mark’s memory to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute or Home Healthcare, Hospice & Community Services, 312 Marlboro Street, Keene, NH 03431.
All services are under the care of Cheshire Family Funeral Home, Chapel, and Crematories.
