Dr. William D.
Moyle
May 3, 1934 — Aug 18, 2026
Keene, NH

St. James Episcopal Church
Starts at 10:30 am (Eastern time)
Dr. William (Bill) Dufford Moyle, Jr., 92, a retired surgeon and long-time resident of Keene, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully in Ashburn, Virginia, on 18 August 2026, with family by his side.
Bill was born on 3 May 1934, in White Plains, New York, to William Dufford Moyle, Sr., and Florence Sweeny Moyle. He spent most of his childhood in Scarsdale, New York, where he attended the Edgemont Schools and graduated from Scarsdale High School.
He earned his B.A. from Wesleyan University and his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College. He completed his training in General Surgery at Bellevue Hospital and North Shore University Hospital in New York. He followed with Fellowships in Thoracic and Vascular Surgery at George Washington University Hospital and Pediatric Surgery at Children’s Hospital in Washington, D.C.
In 1970, Bill declined a prestigious position at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland—a role that would have combined medical practice with teaching, research, writing, and travel. He chose instead to devote himself fully to surgical practice, believing that he could help the greatest number of people through direct patient care. After practicing briefly in Silver Spring, Maryland, he served at the Keene Clinic and Cheshire Medical Center, where he was a highly respected and trusted physician from 1971 until his retirement in 1998. He served as President of the Keene Clinic and was on the Board of Directors for both the Keene Clinic and Cheshire Medical Center. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of several medical associations and societies.
Bill met Anne Downing Doberstein on a blind date while they were in college and he was immediately drawn to her warm and vibrant nature. They were married on 8 June 1957, at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where Anne’s father was a minister and professor. While Bill completed his extensive medical training, they began their family and moved ten times, including to Stuttgart, Germany, for Bill’s two-year posting as a U.S. Army Medical Corps Captain, before settling in Keene. They shared 67 wonderful years together, devoted to one another, their family, and friends.
In Keene, Bill served the community through organizations and causes including, Hundred Nights, Habitat for Humanity, and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. He served on the boards of Home Healthcare, Hospice & Community Services, the Keene Chorale, and the Monadnock Volunteer Center. In 2014, he was honored by the Cheshire Health Foundation for his outstanding contributions to the community’s health and wellness.
Bill enjoyed sailing, hiking, reading, and gardening, and especially spending time with Anne at their summer home on Contoocook Lake in Jaffrey, New Hampshire. In retirement, using his steady hand, remarkable patience, and attention to detail, he became a master woodworker, creating intricate and beautiful jewelry boxes, vases, and bowls that his family will always treasure. He also took up singing and became a member of the Keene Chorale and the Keene Pops Choir.
Bill will be remembered as a devoted family man and a consummate gentleman who dedicated his life to helping others. He was always humble and often quiet, though he loved a good laugh and had a gift for telling funny stories. His grandchildren especially cherished his constant support, his willingness to listen, and the joy he took in sharing life with them—from summers spent tubing and waterskiing behind his boat, to countless card and board games, to his enduring enthusiasm for keeping up with the younger generation.
Bill was preceded in death by Anne, the love of his life; his parents; and his brother, Dr. John Samuel Moyle. He is survived by his four children: Susan Moyle of Nashua, New Hampshire; Beth (Brian) Hall of Mooresville, North Carolina; Cindy (Andy) Adams of Ashburn, Virginia; and David Moyle of Gaithersburg, Virginia. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Polly Baxter Moyle of Kingsport, Tennessee, 11 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren, all of whom loved him dearly and will miss him always.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, 31 August 2026, at St. James Episcopal Church, 44 West Street, Keene, New Hampshire. A reception celebrating Bill’s life will immediately follow. A private burial service will take place at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Bill’s memory to:
