Daniel Joseph
Bastille
November 12, 1959 – June 4, 2026
Daniel (Dan) Joseph Bastille, of Winchester, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully at his home on June 4, 2026, surrounded by family and his best friend at the age of 66. Dan was born on November 12, 1959, in Keene New Hampshire, the son of the late William G. Bastille, Sr and Vivian May (Richards) Bastille.
Dan spent much of his working years alongside his father and brothers as an engineer at Markem-Imaje in Keene, NH, where he built a respected career and forged one of the most important friendships of his life. It was there that he met Dave and Joyce, whose friendship would span decades. Dan was honored to stand beside them as best man at their wedding, a reflection of the loyalty and love that defined their bond.
Dan was a gifted builder. Not only did he build his own home, but he also helped construct homes for several family members. Over the years, he leant his skill, vision and steady hands to countless building projects throughout the area. He possessed a remarkable wealth of knowledge and seemed to know a little bit about nearly everything. Whether discussing engineering, the outdoors, history, or practical know-how, Dan was often the person others turned to for answers.
Dan was happiest outdoors. He loved fishing, whether on the freshwaters of Lake Champlain or going on a deep-sea adventure offshore. Those who shared the water with him will still remember the storm that caught them on Winnipesaukee, Dan standing at the bow, like a figure from a painting, steady against the wind and waves as he led the boat and his friends safely home. A moment that seemed to not only embody his character but immortalize it; calm under pressure, confident in the face of uncertainty and someone others trusted to lead the way. Dan also enjoyed hunting and snowmobiling in the North Country, and spending time on the golf course. A proud member of the local dart league in Keene, he enjoyed the camaraderie, competition and friendships that came with it. Those who knew him will remember that the real joy was never the catch, the trophy or the score, it was the stories shared afterward.
And Dan always had a story.
Funny, friendly and warm, Dan could turn a simple conversation into a well spent evening. He had a gift for making people laugh and a way of staying connected that made friends feel like family. Conversations with Dan often lasted a little longer than expected, wandering through stories, memories, and observations that left people richer for hearing them.
More than anything, Dan loved his family. He carried them with him in every chapter of his life and took great pride in watching each new generation grow.
Dan is survived by his brother, William G. Bastille Jr and his wife, Mary E. Bastille; his brother Timothy J. Bastille and his wife Janice Bastille; and his sister Julie V. Bastille and her spouse Kelly Brahman, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
The measure of a man can often be found in what remains after he is gone, and in that measure, Dan leaves behind a legacy far greater than he ever knew.
A celebration of life will be held in August (more information will be coming at a later date). All are warmly invited to gather, share stories, laughter and memories of a life well lived.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dan’s name to Bridging Hearts Bereavement. P.O Box 10063, Swanzey NH, 03446, or at www.bridgingheartsbereavement.org.
